What Is MCP (Model Context Protocol)?
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open protocol that lets AI models and agents connect to external tools, data and services through a standard interface. Instead of writing custom integration code for every tool, MCP provides a shared “connection language.”
The Problem
When an AI agent needs access to a file system, a database or a third-party API, the traditional approach is to write separate, bespoke integration code for each tool. As the number of tools grows, that becomes a repetitive workload that’s increasingly hard to maintain.
How MCP Solves It
MCP works through a server/client split:
- MCP Server: Exposes a tool’s or data source’s capabilities through a standard interface — a file system, a CRM, an internal API.
- MCP Client: The AI agent or application connects to the server through that standard interface, with no need to understand the server’s internal details.
This split means adding a new tool doesn’t require code changes on the agent side — just connecting to a new MCP server.
Enterprise Impact
MCP makes it possible to connect your internal systems — file stores, CRM, help desk, open-source platforms — to AI agents in a standard, reusable way. As part of our AI Engineering service, we build MCP integrations.
